I have a 84 C4 that has an issue with moisture. I'd need to have the windshield replaced and the seals on all the doors (including the hatchback)and the t-tops. my husband bought this car used 7 years ago, and has not yet been able to "fix it up" and I was wondering if anyone could give me any ideas on how much it would cost me to get all the seals fixed and any ideas on how to get the mildew out of it now that it's been in there? Can anyone help me?
I recently replaced my windshield and the weatherstrip around it....400 for the windshield and install, about 85 bucks for the weatherstrip around it. I called our local chevy dealer and asked them who installed their Corvette windshields, you do not want to take it somewhere where they have not done a lot of C4's. They will probably clean up the metal around the windshield for you that holds the weatherstrip....took my guy about 3 hours to do just that. You may have to purchase new metal. I purchased all my weatherstrip from Willcox Corvette, I am sure they are listed on this sight somewhere. Some say to strictly use GM stuff...but you will pay double. I have had no problems or leaks since. I did not do the targa roof weatherstrip....just windshield and hatch.
Unless the rest of the car is exceptional with very low mileage, the repairs to replace the windshield and all weather strips and likely the carpet for mildew damage will exceed the value of the car unless you can do the work yourself.
my husband will most likely beable to do the work. We have to replace all the weather stripping and the windshield, the carpet and seats (due to the mildew) and he wants to have it sandblasted and repainted... (i think- i dont know a whole lot about how this works- but i am trying to learn) He loves the car and i think he'd do anything to fix it- he just doesnt have a lot of time...or a garage.
The work you describe will require a garage and a LOT of time even for a professional, take that into consideration before spending money on parts, good luck.
I agree with the time factor...I did all of my work myself with the exception of the windshield....cosmetic items such as carpet and weatherstrip are time consuming but not as time consuming as the mechanical issues....I am sure I have several hundred hours into my car and after the mechanical rebuild, the fixing up of the interior and paint were gravy (and very satisfying). I am not a professional and learned everything the "hard way". Just a thorough "cleaning" of the interior after taking the seats out, vacuuming and a shampoo and maybe a can of aerosol carpet dye should take care of the carpet if it is not ripped up or dry rotted. As far as whether or not it is worth the effort and expense, it never will be except for the satisfaction of doing it yourself. I have 8 grand into my car and it is probably worth about 5500, I will get my money out of it by driving it until it needs it all again.
