I'm restoring my 91 vette. I've had it from day one and it needs some work. As far as being a fix-it person, I'm not.
Can anyone tell me how you can tell if the Front Fiberglass Monospring needs replacing or not?
My father-in-law (he's helping me out) said it had spider cracks in it but it was still working ok. A friend of mine told me I needed to replace the spring, claiming he could tell just looking at the tire in relation to the chasis. He said it was cracked even without looking at it under the car.
Now, is cracked "cracked" or do spider cracks count too. Does the monospring lose it's "spring" when sprider cracks develop?
I don't want to replace something unless I have to. The car has 60,000 miles on it.
I would think that the factory spring should last more than 60K miles. Not sure what spider cracks are. Can you post a pic? Also, if you can, post a pic of the front wheel and it's relationship to the front fender while the car is on the ground.
I didn't know if that spring should last 60k or not either. The car rides good other than knocking bottom, but it's done that since it was new. As far as spider cracks, well, he saw them, not me. Spider cracks would look something like what happens to the paint on those flex bumpers when some dope backs into you in the parking lot. Maybe he saw that on the spring or maybe it's his eyes.
Anyway, you kind of gave me what I needed in the spring lasting better then 60k. A picture (due to parrallax or picture perspective) may not offer much to the eye. But that might be a good idea.
Anything to look for if and when the spring goes bad?
