Ask your tire dealer for Yokohama tires in your stock size. That's what I put on mine and I have no complaints at all. Very good treadwear rating and smooth riding also.

255/50 16's are the right size, they are not low profile by any stretch of the imagination. I've got a set of BF goodrich 255/50 16's on mine and they are fantastic.
In 1986 the 255/50X16 was most likely call low profile but by today’s standards they don’t even come close. However as the side wall height has decreased the overall diameter of wheel sizes has increased so a stock 255/50/X16 is the exact same size height as a 255/40X18 http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
I love ym BF Goodrich 255/50/16's that i put on, Awesome traction, only 120/per.

I have the BFGoodrich's on my '92. Best tire I have ever bought.

Any tire you look at as a direct size replacement for your car is not going to vary in size. The tire size designation determines the "profile" of the tire; in this case the 255 is the width of the tires expressed in millimeters. The /50 is the Aspect Ratio and means that the heights of the sidewall is 50% of the width. The -16 is the diameter of the wheel. The 255/50-16 size is correct for your car (and for all 84-87 C4's and were also the base level tire on the '88).
The BG Goodrich tire is certainly a great choice for the C4 and will be quiet, provide a good ride, and have some very good performance characteristics. You might check out the Tire Rack for pricing. They will be less that places like JEG's or Summit Racing.
I am a bf-g dealer and have the gforce sports on my 86. For the $ they are ok but they are impossible to balance and do not ride very well. I wish there were more choices in that size. Too bad michelin discontinued that size. A good thing about them is that they wear well I have about 15k on mine right now and they are about half worn. Dry traction is decent too. Steer clear of the hankooks Ive had a few come through the shop and they are low quality.
