Default Idling Hot

I have had a '94 for almost two years now. It has always run hot in city traffic after running on the freeway. By hot, I mean that the heat indicator moves almost into the hatched danger zone, but never gets there. Once I get moving again, the engine cools back down. This past winter I flushed the coolant system, removed the radiator and cleaned the fins, replaced the water pump, replaced all hoses, replaced the thermostat, and replaced the coolant. The car now runs cooler on the open road (just past 185), but it still heats up to the same place in stop-and-go traffic. I have checked the radiator fan and know that it comes on, but I am not certain if it comes on when it is supposed to. It seems as though the engine is very hot before the fan activates.

My questions are:
Is the heating issue really a problem, or is this normal for C4s?
At what temperature should the radiator fan activate?
Is there anything I have overlooked?

My 95 does the same thing. I go by the digital readout, when it hits 228 the fans kick on and it cools down. They are meant to run hot, I think due to the emissions. In the owners manual it shows the marks and what the temps are. I think the gauge is right, it just looks like its running hot

My '95 does the same thing. It will get up to 228 in the driveway. Most people tell me it is normal.

Mine runs hot in traffic also. Double check that there isn't any debris at the radiator that you can't see though.

Default Thanks and a few other questions

Thanks to everyone who responded. I went to the digital readout and discovered that the temp. wasn't as hot as I suspected. My fan comes on consistently at 228 degrees and shuts off at 217. I didn't find anything in the owners' manual to indicate if that is the normal range. Does anyone on the forum know? Also is 228 high enough to be concerned about? If not, at what temp. should I become concerned. I ask because I suspect that things may get a little hotter on 90 degree days.

228 is fine. What some people do who "don't like" 228 and want their car to run cooler, you can install a relay that will turn your fans on sooner. They can be purchased at any major Corvette store here on the forum. But don't sweat 228. It's normal in these cars. I'd be concerned if you routinely saw temps in the 240 range. Even that won't do any damage but it's getting a little warm for comfort.

not sure if this helps in 93 survice book, there are 2 fans.
primary fan comes on at 219 & the secondary at 226.
maybe your primary fan is not working.
