So I'm at the car wash, polishing the car, minding my own business. A guy with C5 (98) vert pulls into the spot next to me. Of course we start talking, how fun these cars are, good car shows, what year, blah, blah, blah... Then he states that he had a "special chip" put in his car that put him at 500HP. The car looked and sounded bone stock. He didn't mention anything about engine mods. I started to question the whole chip thing as the 98 is OBDII. He said he dropped it off at a shop and Texas and paid $6000 and they put a "chip" in it. I said "cool" and got back to shining.

I've heard of chips that are super expensive, and naturally, the person who lay's out the money raves about it; however, I haven't seen any hard evidence to suport their claim. But, I have heard of the chip, I put it out of my head as soon as I heard the price. Shhhhhh*t.
Sounds like just some guy trying to make what he has better by attaching a crazy price to something he more then likely knows nothing about. Look at me, Look at me, It’s all about me. To bad someone would have to go through life that way. I hope he’s getting his money’s worth.
I hste to say it, but to me he may have been goofing on you.
there might be a chance he is that much of an airbag
Well, he wasn't goofing on me. I know darn well the 98 was OBDII and when i asked him about it it was like, "Well, I dropped it off at this shop in Texas, they said they put a chip in it...". At that point, I changed the subject to waxing Figured it would be better to let the guy believe he had a 500 hp Vette and be happy, then to argue the point any further.
Ehh, it takes all kinds. May have been what he was led to believe. How many people do you know that add up the bolt-on power claims from catalogs? Perhaps he was confused about the price as well. I had a fairly new C6 owner mention the free-flow exhaust was a $7,000 factory option. I wondered why anyone would pay that for six horsepower, but he was convinced. I assume it's just a faulty recollection, it happens.
Or maybe the guy dropped it off for some $6,000 upgrade that bumps it to 500hp, and all he really understood about it was that they changed the computer.

I give you credit for even letting him contine to speak at you, he is obviously a nut, and a used to non vetters buying his story.
When people tell me stupid **** like that I play along. I would have told him I paid $4000.00 and got the 600horsepower chip. I also would have asked him if his car did wheelies with the lesser chip because mine does
