The car is an automatic. 64K original miles on it.
I talked to the woman that owns it, and she said the car doesn't move foward or backwards at all. Sounds like the tranny needs a complete rebuild. So I will have to tow it. She owned it since new and wants someone to give it some TLC. Seats also need to be completely REUPHOLSTERED.
Any help on what the transmission might need? Or is it fried?
Transmission rebuild at the shops near me are $1k for minor, $1.8k for a major rebuild. Seats are, as noted $1.2k.
You have $3k in repairs before you even drive it.
If the paint is good, I wouldn't go over $3k.
If you want a great driving experience I suggest a performance A4 rebuild, with a TransGo shift kit and 2,400rpm lockup TC...
I'm guessing that out the door the package would run ~$2k.
New leather over new foam, installed, would run around $1k.

Thanks.
If she owned it since new and has these problems, she also didn't change the oil or in general didn't take care of it at all.
"RUN FORREST RUN"
The engine is just fine. No check engine light, and not throwing any codes. Seems like a minor problem for a car with only 64K miles.
My .02
I'd ask for maintenance receipts, or at least the mechanic that serviced it. I'd want to know the maintenance history. If she owned it since new, she should know.
If it's a good price, AND you do most of your own wrenching, go for it. They're great cars. Just remember you will have a hard time selling it for over $8k in good condition. (now, perfect condition, ie. show quality, maybe more, depending upon location and season). Remember, it's a 21 year old car.....stuff happens.
