Saw an oil leak on the garage's floor and there I knew this was going to suck. Looked from below and saw the crankshaft position sensor covered in oil and though it maybe the reason the Vette is throwing the P0300 code but, saw more oil dripping from the opti, got up and the oil trail goes up to the water pump. Well it comes from behind the water pump, this got to be the water pump gear.
This is so frustrating, all these months of work and now I'll have to go back and take all front components off.
That sounds familiar. I had this happen on my last 96 and I got some great advice from Greg Gore. Here is his response:
I would also bet the oil leak is the front crankshaft seal. I found on mine the front seal had worn a groove in the damper hub so in my case changing the seal would probably not have fixed it. I think the hubs are discontinued now too so a wear sleeve would be your next choice. I caught mine quick enough that the wear groove was only a couple of thousandths deep. I was able to chuck it up in a lathe and by using a polisher and measuring progress with a micrometer I was able to eliminate the groove to repair the surface and keep enough hub outside diameter to seal up with a new seal. I think the groove would corrupt the fresh lip on new seal if not addressed, and it's a lot of work to have everything back together and discover you still have a leak.
