Hi Dan,
You are not a dope. It can be very confusing when you first join the forum.
If you want to get email notifications, all you have to do is in your user CP, (that would be in the left hand corner where it lists forums, events, etc), click edit options and in the messaging and notification window there is a default thread subscription mode that you can set to get email notifications of any thread that you posted in or that you started.
I personally have mine set to instant, but there are other options as well.
