He's correct. Five code 66 dark orange exteriors were built for pilot production.

Would like to see the car.Ive seen orange metallic on these cars and Im pretty sure it was factory.
Any value to these cars???
I will get a couple pics and post
Hard to say but get the VIN; It should be different from the regular Vette's VIN. It might be unique like the pattern used on the series of number "ones" used on the new ZR1. Last I heard there were at least 3, or 4 of them.
Also does it have a LT5 motor. Think there were some Pilot '88 ZR-1s loaned to Press etc but I don't think they were orange...but Blue??
If his '88 Vette is close to original as it came the from factoyry then your friend might want to join NCRS and get it certified/judged, which will incrase value, IMHO. http://www.ncrs.org/
NCRS is a great source of info and excellent people to help with restoration to original factory condition.
Copper metalic was not offered in '88, but for those five 1988 pilot cars they used the 66 code but described the color as dark orange...no metallic...source Corvette Black Book pg 88
