Hatch Shocks

I am disassembling some of my interior to get the carpets out...I got the driver's side Hatch shock off to facilitate removal of the side piece of carpet but the passenger side is a different shock(no metal retainer clip) and I'm not sure how to remove it...I don't want to break it since it is in good working condition...anyone have this type of shock on their hatch?

Check both ends. When I did this it seemed the end that connects to the glass was much easier to remove.

I'm interested in the reply. I have the same type shock on the passenger side of the hatch on my 87. Couldn't figure how to get it off. It also didn't have the retaining clip.
