I have read several posts regarding antenna issues. My 96 is stuck in the middle. You can hear the ticking noise when starting and stopping the car i.e. with the radio on. Can the antenna be repaired on the car without removing the rear driver wheel? Are the wires long enough to reach the outside? Can the antenna be removed to allow repairing outside the body? I have seen posts by onedef92 that leads me to believe all repairs can be made on the car. I think I rather put this on the bench for repairing. Any thoughts?

I recently did the antenna on my '88 convertible. Don't know how similar they are. By going into the cargo area and pushing some excess wire out through the bulkhead, I was able to unbolt and lay the antenna assembly on the floor of the garage. I didn't disconnect any of the wiring on the antenna, nor did I remove the wheel. I didn't even bother to jack up the car.
Having the antenna on the floor made it easy to open it up and remove the broken bits of ribbon. I then reinstalled the antenna and put the new ribbon and mast on as per the instructions that came in the repair kit.
