Real easy, the hardest part is getting the cables through the firewall, but once you get that done you just route them where the old ones were, hook them up and your done...WW

Default more info

I just did this repair and here is some additional information.

I also removed the hood release lever for the sole reason of using pliers to grab the wire end to open the hood. My break was near the handle. THe handle is held in by only one phillips screw and it holds the handle and a metal guide. I found it much easier to put in the cable with the handle lowered (You do need to remove the carpeted panel under the dash, which you will need to do anyway to recable).
Remove the connection to the under dash light on the left. I did not remove the OBD connection, but I think that is just a few screws.
THe best way to screw the hood release back in is with a small (Narrow) phillips, and one witha screw retainer on it since you will need to do this without visual and puttting the screwdriver between the two cables.

If you have any other questions, feel free to send me a note.

You need to install some emergency release cables. They will save you a lot of heart ache down the road.

I have not had this problem yet but here's a suggestion anyway. If getting the new cable through the firewall is a pain, figure the best direction to go and tape the old and new together. When you pull the old out you'll be pulling the new in. Or at least see if that will work.

Railroadman: thats a good idea! but aren't the holes in the firewall usually only big enough for the two wires?? i don't know myself just wondering! but worth a try, thanks

Love The Vette: i have heard about these emergency release cables! are they just something we would make up and attached and hang down so they can be pulled from under the car?
or are they something to be bought specifically, please inform me! thanks

They are sold at a lot of the Vette vendors; but they are actually easy and cheap to build yourself. Someone just posted on this recently and put on some nice picks of their work. I little aircraft wire and some zip ties. Drill one small hole in the trim at the bottom of the windshield and they run middle-out to the latches. When you need them, they are hidden below the wiper arms.

Do a search under "emergency release cables". There are a number of posts there that will show you a nice solution. Check out one from 9-14-2007. I used 1/16 ss wire, materials were like $4, took about 10 minutes a side. Thre is a great picture on a thread below this called Hood opening tool.

I'm not sure how big the firewall holes are. You may be correct, the new and old may not fit at the same time. Just wanted to throw the idea out before you yanked out the old, in case it DOES work. Good luck with it!
