A stray cat got trapped in my garage over the 4th weekend. The car was under a cover and it must have looked like a great place to take a dump and two or three pees. It was right at the junction of the windshield and the hood, so the pee ran through the cover and down into the air vent.P U I've washed it out with 'Goop' hand cleaner, lots of water, scrubbing bubbles...but the stench is still there.
Any known neutralizers?
Here are a few home remedies that some people have found useful:
Vinegar and Baking Soda - First soak up as much of the urine as you can, then soak the area with a mixture of 1/3 cup of white vinegar with 2/3 cup of water and a little soap. With a clean rag, soak up any excess liquid pressing firmly and repeatedly until dry. Repeat this process using fresh water, and then use another rag to soak up the remaining liquid. After this, sprinkle some baking soda on the area and vaccuum up in 24 hours.
Peroxide - Some people claim peroxide works well in cleaning up cat urine and stains, though this can be tricky on surfaces which might discolor easily. Supposedly, peroxide breaks down the components in the cat urine which cause stains and odor. Pour a small amount directly on the area and allow to dry. Then rinse with warm water and soak up with a rag or paper towel.
Listerine Mouthwash - A number of people claim this helps eliminate cat urine odors when a few drops are added to your water & vinegar solution, or when mixed with a peroxide solution. It can also be mixed with just hot water and dabbed on the area. Most likely this is because of the amount of alcohol in Listerine.
If using a commercial product to clean the cat urine, it is best to follow the intructions on the bottle from that point as each have their own properties and strengths. Some products which have received good reviews include: "Kids 'n' Pets Brand Stain & Odor Remover" and "Just for Cats by Nature's Miracle".
I used the Febrese pet spray in the garage and it has helped, but didn't do much for the car. The pee went down into the vent past that screen mesh under the wipers, so scrubbing isn't an option there. I think I've got it off the surface areas that I can touch, but down inside the vent is my problem now. It'll have to flow something in there and let it chemically do its thing where I can't reach. I had the Peroxide thing recommended by a club member here also so I'll try that next. Watering restrictions here in San Antonio now so I can't have water running down the driveway. Hope it won't kill my almost dead grass if I park under the tree and run lots of water & peroxide through there.
You could put some kind of air freshener in the car while your getting cleaned up. Odoban is good. That and some kind of carpet cleaner would maybe overpower it!

urine is one of natures most powerful odors. why do you think cats, dogs, wolfs, bears, etc use it to mark their territory. since you cant easly access the area you have a tuff job ahead of you. urine is acidic and eats into overtime what it touches. the cat urine is now down in your air hose and most likely in any crud or crime down there as well. if you dont want to dissassemble the area to clean it properly then i would take lemon concentrate (acid as well) mix with water and spray it down there. lemon actually nuetralizes ordors pretty well and you can use it to deter cats from peeing in a certain area. at least the lemon will smell better than the urine or if you use vinegar.
had a friend who purchased a home that the previous owners had pet monkeys. for some reason they let the monkeys pee in this on corner of the house. it worked its way into h studs and down the wall into the basement. bad very bad. they tried everything. ended up having to remove the walls and all studding to get rid of it. urine is no fun at all.
Chatham mentions lemon concentrate deterring the cat from coming back. You need to do SOMETHING, be it home remedy or commercial repellent. Now that one cat has marked it he's apt to come back or some other cat will come along and re-mark it as HIS territory!
this is for small game, not for cats, it is illegal, i guess, so don't used this on cats... this is an example of what not to use, please show these lovely cats some humane behavior....
