Hey guys, been reading these threads for while and you guys have helped me solve several little things wrong with my vette. I'm now at a cross between just driving it and enjoying it, or start really start fixing it up.
Is an 1989 Corvette worth restoring?
I look at the kelly blue book value of the car, it's worth what I have it in now(~5500). If I replace the interior, weatherstrip, and do alittle painting, I'm afraid I could have just found me a c4 in much better shape. As always, thanks for the help in advance.
Me, personally, yes they will go up....but I am alone in that sentiment.
I read somewhere that my year, '84, there were 55 thousand made. A lot of them have to go the way of the DoDo before mine becomes "Rare"
But yeah they have go up some time as does all old cars that hang on long enough
I guess I should answer your question.......Today is it worth it? You may do better by putting your money into a Mutual fund.
If you'd like to enjoy driving a cool car while it appreciates.....then sure....build yourself a killer car and show off your mechanical prowess to us all.
Go for choice number 2....

They all have problems if you know all the ones you have right now probably ahead of the curve.. I have one after another 'rigged' things on my 91 than I care to discuss but know I think all of them so have finally got a game plan that has a beginning that has started and a known end.. If I knew the PO was a used car dealer would have never bought it man those guys know all the tricks..LOL But saying that I have a plan and over half way through both in time and $$$$ so the end in sight..

Good clean C4s will go up in value.
The only question is how long before that happens.
I doubt if it's any time soon.
BUT... because the Gov keeps printing money and the debt ratio of 50 percent in 2009, is projected to be 78 percent of GDP by 2019, it'll take a lot more dollars to buy everything in the future!
I agree with those who say that the same Vette that costs ~ $55 today will cost about $75-$80K in 2019!
IMHO, saving cash today for future purchases is not a smart idea. Some say buying a $200K rental will have a market value about of about $290K in 2019 vs. the $200K which WOULD STILL HAVE only $200K value if you saved in cash.
I'm confident our Vettes will increase in market value, (buying power) with all of that inflationthat the GMC (Gov Motor Co.) dictates for greener cars...econo boxes
In answer to the original question, probably not. However, I agree with most of the posters-get it the way you want it, but don't put a lot of money into the restore thinking it's an investment. Fix the car so you can enjoy it, it will be decades before it will be a collector's item, and there are still, believe it or not, many very low mile perfect C4s out there that people are holding on to because they are not bringing what they think they are worth.
I believe that the values will go up. This includes the C4's. I think it's going to take some time though. When the economy gets going again, maybe the C4's will have bottomed out and the C5's will be the ones taking the major hits in value.
Look at how long you could buy a bumper car for little or no money. I still stumble across one for less than 10 grand now and then. I still say the more that is made overseas ( which is pretty much everything anymore) increases the value of what was once made here in the USA.
When the new C4's came out, alot of people said they were junk even though the 84 model was car of the year. They said the same thing about the C3. Time will be the ultimate judge.
there is a thread on one of the other forums showing the c4 is finally gaining some value and respect. they all go through the stages
-new sell high
-used marked up (corvette tax)
-old worthless
-antique(classic) gose up again
now the c5's are doing the nose diving, but they been out 12 years already
