Default Body Molding Question

Quick question. I've seen several pics of corvettes on this forum with the body side molding the same color as paint. Can the stock black molding be painted or are those aftermarket colored molding? How well does the paint stick? And is there any special prep before painting the molding?

Thanks for any help!!

Most vettes I have seen the molding matches the body color. I know my 35th was repaited but the molding is pure white while the body is off-white. I don't think the stock color is black.

My moulding is painted (car is black though). The paint has stayed on my moulding without any problem.

The early C4s all have the black rub strip. (84-90). The rub strip was replaced for body side molding that matches the body paint color in 91-96 cars.
The rub strip can be painted, but it looks stupid in my opinion.

I just checked the molding on mine and where the paint has chipped off the molding is an dark ivory color. I wish I had a picture of my 84, but then I wish I could remember the 84:o

Can the newer style be put on my 89?

Thanks,

Corvette Mike

Not really. You can rework the car, but you may as well get a later C4 if you want that. You'd have to get a front bumper, new 1/2 fenders, new door skins and new rear bumper.

, except for the door skins...

as a side note, i personally like the black side molding on the early c4's - it's the cars character line.

ps: dale - saw your car at front street last night - stopped by to say "hi", but you were nowhere to be seen - maybe next time...

The black molding on my 89 is not as wide as the side molding on my 93 and it sticks out farther than the 93.

Wow, cool!

I don't hang by my car, I like to look. I saw that lady from Stow's ZR1, WOW. I go to that show every couple weeks, since I live there. Let me know when you'll be there, I'll show up.

What did you think of the car?

your car was looking sharp - that's the first time i had seen it in person - other than that, just photos that you've posted on the forum. white over red is one of my favorites. great choice on the wheels

was that ZR-1 the red 91 parked up near portage trail and the front st entrance (south side)? car only had 10K on the clock, or was there someone there with another ZR-1 that i didn't see? if it was the 91, that was a really nice car. i was parked next to it - had my steel blue 90 out for the day (can't believe, i've had my 90 less than a year, and already put 10K on the clock). forum member "Bob Ficorilli"s green 95 was there - mint w/ about 25K on the clock. somehow Sitts ended up with it, and it was sold locally - another fine car.

i go to front street about once a month, and it's usually a last minute decision - maybe out paths will cross down the road...

Yes, I was talking about the red 91 ZR1 parked near Portage Trail. Great car.
I did notice the other C4s there, I saw yours and the green 95. Sitts got a lot of money for that 95, the asking price was $18k and it didn't sit on the lot very long, so I'm guessing they got close to that for it. The guy that bought the 95 traded in a black 92 for it, the 92 has about 39k on the clock.

If you show up at front street, sooner or later you'll bump into me.
