Good afternoon everyone,
This morning I drove to the base exchange, and stopped at a book store on the way home. When I came out my '87 would not start.I waited 10 minutes and it started.I didn't make anymore stops until I was back home.I shut it off and it started.I have a reading of 13.7 volts with engine running.I did a search and learned that 13.7 was ok.I have the FSM but have not found my specific case.Is it time for a new battery? This one is four years old. Thanks in advance.

Sounds alot like the vats was acting up. Didn't recognize the resistance
of the pellet in your key. When that happens you must wait 6 or 8 minuts before it resets.
While you're at it take the battery to Auto Zone or most battery outlets and have it load tested. Make sure that the battery is charged for a better test. These new batteries don't have the life like the old ones. I had one that died after two years.

Good read.....and clean the pellet with alcohol or...vodka?
just a caution about fast charging. I have an 86 coupe and after fast charging (engine start) with my charger I started getting an ABS light (which I still have). Later, I read a warning about using the engine start mode on a charger because it can cause problems with the electronics.

It could be a dirty pellet, but more likely as these cars age, the brushes that contact the pellet wear. In this case you would either need a new cylinder assy. or purchase/fabricate a bypass which always reports the proper resistance to the VATS system. That's what I did.
