I have an 87. Today the dash started flashing on and off, going black then all lights light up, and sometimes it might go back to normal, this can take up 5 minutes. I am assuming there is a master plug that connects to the instrument panel, right? I thinking that it is loose. Anybody ever experience this, and any suggestions before I dig into it?
Could be the multi pin wiring harness connectors, the edge connectors on the circuit boards, or more commonly the ground wire in the harness. If the turn signal indicator lamps (both) come on when the cluster is off, then its the ground connection on the ground wire in the harness. If not the ground, you can try cleaning the contacts on the harness connectors and powering up and if it still is intermittent, then unplug the two circuit boards and wipe the edge connectors and plug the boards back in. DO NOT use any kind of abrasives on the edge connectors, they have a microscopic plating of gold on them and if you remove that gold, you will have a lifetime of poor connection!!!!!!!!!
You might also have a headlight dimmer problem, or a poor connection of the 4 cluster lamps between the lamp sockets and the circuit board, but it would be very unusual for all four lamps to go out at the same time and be the lamp sockets.
