Default Cooling Fan Problem...

Today, I got caught in downtown traffic (Chicago) while coming home from class and my coolant went over 250 degrees! ( I have never seen it over 230 degrees) All of the warning indicators/lights came on but they quickly went away as the road opened up. By the time I got home the coolant was down to 196 degrees but I noticed my primary fan is not working. I have a manual fan switch that also programs the fans to come on at 203 degrees but it does not turn on the primary fan and either does the A/C. I made sure the fan is plugged in and spins freely. What could it be?

***
While trying to diagnose the problem I made it worse. Now none of the fans come on no matter what I do, my SERVICE ASR light is on, and when I put my parking lights on my headlights flip open! Is there a fuse that I could have blown or any other ideas?

Where are the cooling fan fuses located? I have the shop manual but I can not find a fuse panel diagram showing what each fuse is linked to.

Thanks

Fuse panel is on the end of the dash when you open the passenger side door.

Do the fans come on when you turn on the A/C?

The year of the car is always a great help. The fan configuration changed over the years.

Post the schematic and we will help.

1992, and no fans even with A/C. The secondary fan did work until yesterday but I tried to jump power to the primary fan and now both fans do not work. And I know where the fuse panel is but I am not sure which fuse is for the cooling fans. There has to be a diagram of the fuse box in the shop manual but I can not find it.

Think there is a fuse box diagram in owners manual.

Does yours have the dual fans on the engine side?

You can ground the green/white wire on the fan relay to turn on the fan relay/s which supply 12v to the fan motors. You should be able to hear the relays click. Fans won't run unless the ign is in run. Unplug the fan/s and jump 12v to the fan motors, they should run. These motors have brushes and the brushes don't last forever. Also, one fan motor wire goes to ground and sometimes the screw grounding one fan motor wire gets rusted and doesn't make connection to ground. Check out the ground connection too.

I changed the fuse and now one fan works again and my SERVICE ASR light is off. I found out that I need a new fan motor.

Thanks,
Daniel

Depending on which motor you replace be sure the fan fits. I have an 85 and when I replace a bad motor, I also had to replace the blade because the old blade didn't fit the new motor!! Anyone interested, I've an 85 blade just hanging around!
