Got mine to 240 km/h (150 mph) in 5th gear on my 94 LT1. Had to slow down in a hurry for traffic before I could make it to 6th. The windows on the doors were sucked in and sounded like they were going to explode. It was great.

Typical mag results were reported in the 155 to low 160s range, although I recall a single magazine that reported 170 mph for the LT1 and even commented on how surprised they were, must have been a strong one in ideal conditions. To call it a 170 mph car on average is definitely stretching it quite a bit, though. :o
I recall the Road & Track special Corvette issue when the 375 HP C4 ZR-1 came out. They got 172 mph, but that was shown to be on the low side compared to most of the later ones. The L98 Vette they tested (245 HP) in the same issue did 147 mph, so yes, the ZR-1 was quite a bit faster as its stablemate in the beginning. The 330 HP Grand Sport C4 made the ZR-1 a bit unnecessary, though.
Stock LT1 should go high 150's, low 160's as said. 170 is pushing it, and top speed is achieved in 5th, not 6th. 6th is geared much too high for top speed runs (in anything close to stock form).

I have that article in front of me... It’s from Motor Trend, August 1994, page 38. They tested a ’94 Z07, it was clocked at 170 mph. The speed was reached in 5th gear. They also ran a Camaro Z28, it was clocked at 159.3 mph.
