Default LT1/Opti spark????

I was just wondering if I could replaced the stock LT1 with a non opti engine with a distributer?? If possible, what problems would I run into doing this conversion? This would be in a 94 Vette.

Sorry for the elementry question. I have a bit of experience with older small blocks and I am still learning this LT1. I do not like the idea of the opti being under the water pump either.

Thanks in advance.

Sure you can, you can stick a big block Chevy in a C4 if you want to and you woudln't be the first even on CF to do it. The opti is $300.00 bucks and my original one lasted 11 years not a real big deal. The guys that cry about the opti usually

1. Don't own one, never have either.
2. Think changing plugs on a LT1 is a bitch too

The only way I would put an old school Gen I s.b.c. in a late C4 is if it were a bracket car and I wanted a monster stroker or a big cube big block complete with solid axel rear to plant the power.

Why fix something that isn't broke. My LT1 is the fastest/easiest starting engine I have ever owned.

Not 100% sure I am going to change it. Just curious of it was possible and how difficult it would be.

Thanks for the advise. Future plans for this car is a Turbo, so staying with the LT set up will make it easier to find a kit. We'll see what happens.

Stick in an MSD instead of the Opti.

Or remove the opti and convert to a coil per cylinder setup.

I wouldn't bother with the MSD. I did and I'm sorry. It's put together like a tank and looks good too. The trouble is that it is filled with junk overseas electronic parts that can't keep up with the rpm of an LT4 engine and misfires above 5000rpm. It runs great under that, but then what's the point of having that engine if you can't crank it up when you want to? My next time for Opti will be a Dynaspark. I'm done with MSD's stuff because it's like putting crap in a bank vault, what's the point?

If your worried about the early opti, "when" you have to replace your current one, get the replacement one vented.

1. You can get an MSD, or dynaspark which both vents their early opti.
2. Buy a MSD cap and rotor kit, which will vent you early opti.
3. Vent it yourself for under $10.00, and get yourself some opti venting hose. See the pics in my profile.

Optis are not as bad as they made out to be.

But changing LT1 spark plugs IS a bitch, though.

I bought a Dynaspark, but after returning my 93 back to a coil and module as it had a Delteq coil system in it the opti is working ok. So now I have the Dynaspark as a spare just in case. It is a great looking and well built system over the stock system. I have also heard of negative results and comments about the MSD system, but have never seen one or talked to anyone that has had one. As far as changing plugs, they were a problem for me the first time. I think I learned a few ways that would help when I do it again. I think a big thing is to be careful not to cross thread or strip the threads out.

The Dynaspark does look like a nice piece. I will probably go in that direction over the LS style coil per cylinder. The coil per cylinder kit is very cool idea though.

Thanks again,

MSD I have been told by a mechanic at EPP (Exotic Performance Plus) to stay away from these. For what they cost and the negative feedback put your money saved in another motor upgrade. My stock unit is still going strong with almost 130k on it.
