Now that my 1996 is running spectacular I would love to drive her more often but I tend to avoid driving it at night because the headlights are so dim. Has anyone had any luck with an aftermarket bulb?
I put in a set of Sylvania Silver Star Ultra's. They are glass instead of plastic so if the bushings in your motor are weak, you may have problems. They are not too hard to change and the part is cheap (bushings and bulbs). They made quite a signifiant difference over the stock bulbs. Definately worthwhile.
Buy the Hella H4 housing H4651 and use an 80/85 watt H4 halogen bulb.
It'll cost about $125 for the upgrade but, is the most cost effective to upgrade the weak stock light output. I tried the Sylvania Silverstars and the cheap Diamond cut lenses on Ebay but, they were all a disappointment.
I get Great light output from the Hella H4 lenses with the 80/85 watt Osram H4 bulbs. You'll have to cut open the back of the stock light housing bracket to fit the larger rubber bulb cover on the Hella lens, which is very easy to do.

I changed out my '91 several years ago with Hellas. Not the same bulbs, but will give you much improved lighting. Check out this site and give them a call to help you decide which configuration is best for you. http://www.rallylights.com/default.aspx
