I haven't been to a strip in forever, and my fever is getting up, so I have a couple questions before I go and make myself look like a fool.
A stock 87 (FlowMaster & K&N Air Filter only mods) will run around 14 sec in the quarter, right? What will it run in the 1/8 mile? Thinking about what class I would be in.
My air pressure is @50psi now, what should it be for dragging? Same, lower and how much lower. Street tires 295/35/18's(all 4) I believe.
Will taking spare out really make much of a difference?
4-tenths tree means 3 yellow light at one time and then green, or each yellow light lights, then green. Which is it?
No disrespect intended, but personal experience only, please. Thanks

Well first off you should be around 9.0 to 9.5 in the 1/8. As for tire pressure with street tire it all depends on the tire and rim size. Start off with what the tire is rated at on the sidewall and see how it hooks up. If the track is preped good with a stock car you should be ok. Are you an auto or stick? I wouldn't go more then 10lb under that but you will have to work your way there. You can take the spare out but you might not notice any difference. Now the last one is a .4 pro tree all 3 yellow then green. I don't know why they would use that tree at your track but you will never cut a good light on it. I have a low 12sec car and ran a pro tree once. I had to deep stage just to get a .1 light very hard. Most tracks will use a .5 sportsman, tree each yellow light then green every 1/2 sec. I hope that answers your questions good luck and have fun.

I knew I forgot something. It's an auto. I also said 14sec quarter, because that's what I've seen as a stock time. Guess that's right? Tires say 50lbs, so nothing under 40lbs. Thanks for your insight. I can't wait. It's been 20 yrs since I've been to the track. I used to help a guy w/65 Nova @10.90's, and I loved every minute of it. Everybody has to start somewhere, right?

I didn't know that 18's were rated at 50psi. You can test the tires in a safe place just look at the marks and get them to print even. If you go to low the tires will cup and print heavy on the outsides. With an auto you shouldn't have any problem. The more air the less roll resistance the faster you go. Have fun out there and be safe.

50 psi seem very high for street use; how does your car ride? Stock is more like 35psi.

Shallow stage;
Turn the top staging light on and just tickle car in until the 2nd light comes on.Don't roll any further.
Leave on the last yellow; wait for the green and you will lose.
With stock car you will probally get better launch results launching off idle ( hold about 1000 rpm ); rather that trying to load up revs on the convertor.
Make sure you know where the finish line is so you don't back off too soon.

My 87 ran very low 9s in the 1/8 and very low 14s in the 1/4 when I got it as a 35000 mile original. 100000 miles later, it runs 12s , not so original.

the PSI rating on the side of the tire is the MAX rating... dont ever set your pressure at that!!! 32 - 35 psi at most, any higher and youll develop an uneven wear pattern in your tread

my 89 (very similar to your 87) went 13.9 at 99mph with a 2.0 60ft in good air. i decreased my tire pressure to around 18 - 20 psi for those runs. i also iced my intake manifold between passes and let the motor cool to around 140* on each run

good luck and have fun!
