1990 convertible
I have a 90 convertible and i am having trouble with the fuel system. Sometimes when I start it, it cuts right off. Other times it will start then shut off a minute later. When it drives it will sometimes backfire and when i step on the gas it bogs off or stutters. It has bee doing this for a year. Sometimes it will drive fine for a month and then the next day i will have the same problems. Does anyone have an idea of what is wrong? I am in the process of changing the fuel pump.

sounds like the fuel pump is a good start. Had an 88 GTA do the same thing, and it ended up being a fuel pump.

I would start with the simple and work to the more expensive.
If you got bad gas, or water in the gas, that would cause this. But you said it was happening for a while.
Otherwise, I would start with the fuel filter. If it is clogged, it will do that.
Next I would look at the fuel pump. If you can get a fuel pressure gauge on to the fail rails, that will help to figure it out.
Your injectors could possibly need a rebuild.
Good luck!

Good point. I guess I just take it for granted that most people check the obvious general maintanance and easy stuff first. LOL

Do not forget to ohm test the fuel injectors. In my '90, the original Multecs eventually let me down in the parking lot of the Mall.

I'd also change the fuel filter if you don't know when it was last changed

Man does this sound familiar. My 89 coupe was doing the exact same thing and it was driving me crazy. I tried the things you all have mentioned and then it was suggested I change my injectors. I did and never had another problem.
