Default Holy Smokes!

Glad I found this before it went for too long. I was checking out the ground at g104 and checking out the wiper motor(problem as I have already posted about them). Out of the corner of my eye I saw bare wires going into the relay to the driver's side of the wiper motor. Here is what I found.

Luckily the pigtail is still available from rockauto but it looks like I may end up doing a lot of rewiring. ARGH!

Nice catch, good luck with the wiring, i'm no electrician so it would be a nightmare for me.

Solder an in-line splice with the connector you found using shrinktube and you are good for another 20 years.

Well I wrapped the exposed wire with electrical tape until the pigtail and new relay arrive. After searching it looks like this is a very common problem and all new owners should be warned to check the fuel pump relay wires. I checked as many other wire connections as I could and so far that is the only one that is shot. Electrical gremlins!

Older cars and plastic insulated wires just were not made to last into the collectable ages. And under the hood of a Corvette we all know gets too hot. When you take that all too often gaze at your " Baby ", take a moment to look under the hood for insulation deterioration. It's a Gremlin that keeps on going. In the past few years UL made 'em change plastic so it will last forever. In 20 years that story will come of age. In the meantime, keep your eyes open. I've already had a few issues with my 85. Around 4,000 miles per year, 2,000 per year the last 6 years, and only in the heat of the summer, after 24 years the plastic insulation is pretty brittle. The older they get the more TLC they take. I love my 85 more every year. Thanks for showing us your issue.

thanks for the heads up! it definatly looks like the insulation was more prone to cracking and falling apart near the connector. any thoughts behind this? on the RX-7's the wires usually crack in the center but never near the connectors.
