I have a 1995 LT1 with 6 speed xmission and the backup lights don't work. I noticed it about a month after I bought the car - I never checked the backup lights before buying it. I checked the fuses - they're good. All electrical components working properly. The sockets are like new - bulbs replaced- wiring new. The car has 14000 miles and has never seen rain. Is there any check I can perform before buying a new backup switch? Should I check the voltage at the sockets when in reverse? Will that tell me about the switch? How about removing the switch connector and taking measurements / jumpering contacts? I don't have a schematic/wiring diagram - would appreciate any help.
There is a back-up light switch located on the transmission, near the top, by the bell housing on the drivers side. The SM says it is pink & green wires. You need to be a contortionist to reach, but it can be done without lowering the tranny. It's been known to short out or come loose. When mine went out, I had to clean the contacts and it's been working fine ever since. Good luck
just did mjne. a pita. went to sears, bought a 7/8 1" drive socket p/n -g-47771, drilled out the hole in the side to put a large phillips scewdriver in. it took 4 hours, 3:45 going to sears and back.

same thing.7/8 = 18mm. finding a socket that would fit in the space between tunnel was hard. took new switch with me, 1"drive was large enough to let connector go thru. once you break the switch loose, it comes out by hand. 15 min. or less.
