The previous owner put loud mufflers on my 90 coupe. They sound great outside the car but inside they make ahelluva lotta noise. Has anybody put sound insulation under the mats to quiet the muffler noise in your car? The drone is really awful. Did it help? Advise please. Allentown Ernie.
it all helps, you can't lose but some time and some money and it will help your car stereo sound better, dynamiting or similar in the rear area will create a barrier for some resonance, but not all, helped me.
i went with a corsa and live with that compromise for sound , rudeness and quietness at cruise...

I tried the Dynomat in the rear area when I had drone issues. I can't say it did anything for the drone but the POS Bose sounds better. It also added about 30lbs or so the weight of the car.
Just isn't a lot you can do on these car for resonance except change exhaust systems. Either back to stock or Corsa seem to work the best. Good luck
Get a wad of aluminum foil @ the size of a golf ball or a little bigger. Place it in the inner exhaust muffler pipe and ram it deep into the pipe with a broom handle. Do this on both mufflers - inner pipe exhaust exit.
Drive it like this and see if it helps. I tried this on my '90 and it helped a lot. This will get you by until you save up enough for the Corsa system or decide to put the stock mufflers back on her. The annoying drone of most aftermarket exhaust systems negates any slight performance gains. Cruising gains are minimal at best with an aftermarket system and really only offer any HP at wide open.
I say keep 'em stock and drive forever - modify 'em and drive 'em until they break down, which seems to be often on a modded car.
In my opinion, contrary to what the masses say, put your money into better heads and intake system if you are going to modify your car for more speed. If you want more fun, install a @2600 stall converter if it is an auto and you want to keep the stock engine. THat puts the shift points right where the motor is making maximum torque. The exhaust system mods are usually cheap and easy to do but offer little gain.
I have a 1990 with 190,000 miles. THe tranny went out at 165K and Installed a performance transmission with a 24-2600 RPM stall converter. That's good enough to smoke any 1995 and earlier mustang, TA, Camaro, BMW etc..
