Targa top question

I have to re thread the nut in my 86 targa top, I cross threaded it after putting on new weatherstrip. It is the female nut inside the bracket of the top that accepts the bolt from the windshield. My question is does anyone know the size of the tap I would need to use. I have never done this so I have to buy a tap set. How do you figure out what the size is? I am guessing it is metric but I don't know how bolts are sized or measured. I don't want to damage it any more than it is. Thanks

Don't know the thread size, but if no one chimes in with it, take one of the bolts to a hardware store or a bolt place and have them measure the threads for you. Just an idea
