I replaced the starter on our 1986, it was in foul shape. Sometimes it would start and sometimes not. I still have the same problem though. Not starting. Can anyone tell me where the wire on the little post of the solenoid goes?? That wire is not hot when the key is turned to the crank position. I checked the relay and it seems to be working. As far as VATS, im assuming it is working. The lights come on in the dash when the key is turned on. Any advice??
I'm not sure if the '86 had the same type of key as my '92. When I bought it there was one key, and I bought a second one for backup. On vacation we seemed to be having frequent VATS issues so I switched to the newer key. End of problem.
Don't know if that helps but if not someone else will chime in.
Found my first problem, actually my wife did. The car will start in neutral if you wiggle the shifter so I ordered a safety switch (its an automatic). This will prob be a long term project. Nothing works in the dash or DIC but as I said before it was my brother-n-laws prized posession (he passed while I was in Iraq) and he left the car to me and my wife wants to get it back to tip top shape in his honor.
