Yeah mate the bushes in the main drive gear are rooted. Mine did that not long after i got my 94, i didnt bother replacing the bushings with the original type, i used steel shims. Never ever had another issue with them.

Unless youre in an area where you expect to see ice build up on your headlight assemblies, i dont see any good reason not to install something metal in place of the stock bushings.
Before you proceed with gears, and bushings etc.
Turn on your headlites with the hood Open, and check if it still stops half way. I had this problem and it turned out to be a headlite bezel striking the coolant recovery tank aluminum pipe.
