When I lost my keys I called AAA, the locksmith they sent had a red metal box which would detect what VATS number my car was, he had to replace the whole ignition lock but AAA covered almost all the cost. I forget what overage I had to pay.
Going to the dealer only works if you know for sure the lock cylinder has never been changed or are the original owner to know. Plus you're going to need door keys also anyway. I gambled and lost $45 on a key from the dealer by way of VIN which I couldn't get back because the cylinder had been changed out.
I called a locksmith. The whole cylinder does not have to be changed. They guy that I hired had a device that allowed him to test each code one at a time till the car cranked. First he cut the profile to unlock the steering column, then he tested each code till it cranked and produced the final key with pellet. So only a key was made. That's what I should have done in the first place.
