problems with the '86 are the same as the problems for the '84.
I've had both. and been 'had' by Corvette. 2 yrs and they didn't fix one thing.
MAF sensor relay, passenger door window, power antenna, water pump, 3 alternators, smog pump, overheating, gas/air mixture, etc.
this week's problem is the transmission, 700R4, won't go into any gear.
Jesus, I'm wondering if the OP is still waiting for your answer after three years

Actually there is a reliability problem with the original Al head gaskets. The technology just wasn't available for Al to Fe mating back then. At the first sign of trouble best to replace those ASAP.
Early car, this is what you can expect, window regs junk, already proven, the steering rack will need to be replaced regardless and the issue of the A.C. it might be the clutch, these are junk in the early cars. The paint will fall off the car. This is just for starters for anybody looking at an early C4.
I got the new regulators for my 87, and forget the headlights cause they were always the bain of my existence in the old days, I'm going to a lemans style and the originals will be in display in my shop. What parts of the steering rack should I look for to upgrade? Any other upgrades to look for? I been searching the forum to identify these. Newer compressor?
Wow just realized how old this thread was

dude I’m here in 2023 looking at this forum before I buy an 1986 c4
Go for it, 86 has the anti-lock brakes... Late model in the production run have aluminum heads. 86 have one piece rear main seals on the crankshaft. Most everything that goes wrong with an 86 also goes wrong with all 85 to 91 L98 cars. Weather seals, ratty interior wear, headlight motor gears, antenna, Bose Stereo... etc etc.. Good Luck.
