Perhaps this topic has already been covered, if so could someone post a link to the thread? If not, I'm curious to what everyone uses in their c4's. I'm actually surprised this isn't a poll that has been stickied, if this board has poll capabilities. What do you think the best oil is to use in an older vette?
I haven't changed the oil yet on my vette, I just purchased it. I use to use castrol 10w-30 on my 70 Chevelle, with a cheap fram or stp oil filter. Do the performance oil filters or tough guard filters actually offer more protection?

There's really no one answer. If you do a lot of short trips I'd use conventional oil and change it often (every 3 months or 3000 miles). If you're doing frequent oil changes Fram filters are probably adequate. For the same money, I'd use Motorcraft, Pure One, or Bosch filters. If you are driving the car hard, long distance trips, or infrequent oil changes I'd go with synthetic oils. I really don't think it makes a difference which synthetic you use, be it Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Amsoil, etc. I go with Mobil 1 because it's easily available and usually available on sale.

My last oil change I used Mobil 1 synthetic and a Purolator filter. I've used Valvoline and Castrol synthetics in the past. As long as it meets the GM standard for the LT1 engine, I'll put it in my engine.

There really is no reason to sticky it. It is a constantly discussed subject.
What spark plugs should I use, and who makes the best wax probably come in tied for second.
Alot of guys here have the "nothing is too good for my baby" philosophy, and recommend many high dollar oils. Ever since Mobil 1 began installing there decal under the hood of c4's (as factory fill) there has been a huge following for it, and that is normally the name I see over, and over again, in all sections of this forum.
My vehicles survived for many years before synthetics were "chic and in style", so I continue to use normal, old school, dead dinosaurs.
Alright, here's my take. I have a 180 degree thermostat, with a 180 switch, and fans are wired together to come on at 180. from what I understand, Vettes only run as hot as they do to pass emitions standards, and that is the reason for using syn. oil. therefore, I use conventional oil. In Fl. 10-30 works fine year round. I stick to a good brand name usually Castrol.
Everyone will have their own opinions on what oil and filter to use and how often to change it. You can use the search function to find all sorts of threads about both oils and filters.
You car doesn't require a synthetic oil, just a good quality 5W-30 or 10W-30 oil. As far as filters, some will say to stay far far away from FRAM. An oil filter study done some years ago showed that the filter material in the standard Fram filter was really cheap stuff and even had less material that other filters. I don't know a lot about STP filters, but I personally would not use them either.
For my supercharged '02, I use either AC Delco filters or Mobil-1 and 5W-30 Mobil-1 synthetic. In my '87 I use either Mobil-1 or K&N Filters and 5W-30 Mobil-1 synthetic. The 87 is primarily for autocross and track days, so I do see some pretty high oil temps especially on track days.
Castrol is a goodt oil, as is Valvoline, Quaker State, and Pennzoil. For the Penz haters, I have used Pennzoil for many years in both street and race motors and never once had an oil-related failure or any sort of deposit build-up.
I thought I read on this forum sometime back that it wasn't a good plan to switch to a synthetic after using conventional oil for an extended period of time. Any truth to this?

Historically, folks indicated that synthetics caused leaks in their vehicles. I do not believe this is true anymore, if ever (I changed my 1966 Corvair to synthetic. Based on legend how could I tell if synthetics caused leaks?). Go ahead and make the switch if you want to run synthetic.
