Quick question for you experts. My 84 baby has a small trans leak I just noticed. Its funny, it never leaks a drop when I use it for a while. Once I leave it for a week or so I notice a small amount of trans fliud in the pan I have under her.
I have a square stainless pan I made, about 16 x 32 and It is placed under car when I park her. This way I can see if anything is leaking at all.
Whenever I drive her like for a few days in a row, there is nothing there.
But I left it sit for about a week and noticed a small amount of trans fluid. Its happened a couple of times. I crawled under and checked everything and it is all tight.
Is it possible its just needs a new pan gasket for the pan?
I am thinking maybe it drys out when it sits and then leaks out a little.
My'84 does the same thing. All gaskets were changed during rebuild 3 years ago.
It leaked prior to and after. Not sure why, but it's so minor, That I'll throw it on the lift when I get a chance.
My 96 was doing the same thing. It was leaking from the plug on the speed sensor, I changed the sensor today and that fixed it. Im not sure if the 84 has the same type of sensor or not but it would be worth checking. Its was an easy fix.
Mine has small leak from where the selector shaft enters the case , more noticible when car has been sitting and the fluid level in the trans rises as the fluid drains back
Too hard to change seal in car. Will get replaced next time trans comes out
I had a waterpump that would only leak if the temp went down below freezing at night , I figured it had to do with the shaft seal getting cold and contracting, letting coolant leak past . Maybe your transmission seal is having the same thing happen..WW
What's your fluid level look like? I had a S-10 Blazer that I had the transfercase rebuilt and it started leaking trans fluid after I got it back. The mechanic said that the trans was bad too. When I checked the fluid level he had over 1 qt. too much fluid in the trans - so much for that mechanic. But maybe your level is just a tad too high causing it to come out. Just a wild guess.

Any ideas guys?

I am not sure what the question is.
If you are only asking if the trans pan gasket can be dried out and leaky after 25 years, the answer is yes.
If you are wondering if there are other potential leak points, the answer is yes.
There are approximately 25 potential leak points on a 700r4.
My suggestion is to look carefully for the leak, or pay someone to put tracer dye in the fluid to make it easier to see.
I have 1 family member and 1 friend that decided to ignore a minor trans leak, and was rewarded with vehicles that burnt to the ground.
Find the leak, and fix it.
Mine has leaked from the selector shaft and leaks on the exhaust, dont like that.My repair guy has replaced the o-ring two times. He thinks heat from exhaust melts the o-ring.

Interesting that you bring this up. My '84 set a check engine light the other day. I hooked up my Auto Xray Tech Scan 7000 to pull the code. Guess what...Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). My speed does not register on the digi-dash but the rpms do.
Guess I'll replace the VSS and hopefully that will resolve my leak also...
Thanks for the info.

I got lucky. Our 86 had a small leak and it ended up just being three bolts were a little loose on the trans pan. Tightened them up a month ago and haven't had a spot in the garage since.
I had a leak from the tranny filler tube seal. It sits at the front corner of the passenger side of the pan. The car had sat for 3 months when I dropped the pan and replaced the seal. The only concerning thing is I had to put in 7 quarts to get the level in range after I got the tranny hot, where I believe you are supposed to put in 5 quarts when you drop the pan. The only thing I can think of is more fluid had drained into the pan from sitting compared to if you had driven it shortly before you dropped the pan.
The rear seal on mine is leaking. Probably been like that for years. Though, the only time I noticed anything on the ground was after I jacked up one end.
The only thing is it could be a $60 or $200 fix depending if you only have to replace the rubber seal, or also replace the metal shaft.
