I don't know about the 96, but my '92 has a factory rack. I don't recall the RPO code. Here's what it looks like:

According to the Black Book: for option V56:
1989 - 616 units sold.
1990 - 1,284 sold.
1991 - 886 sold.
1992 - 845 sold.
1993 - 765 sold.
The retail price of the luggage rack option remained at $140.00 for all years.
Does anyone have a guess as to why the 1990 C4 convertible doubled the number of racks sold from the previous year? Maybe an "I want one, too" by those who saw the option in brochures.
Or how about a push from Bowling Green with some options already installed?

I am ;ikely wrong, but I thought the rsck csme in a box, in the car and the dealer installed it.
When I got mine it was in a box with templates and I thought a note to dealer. I got mine on e bay

jacdaroofer, I am sure you are exactly right about the dealer installed option for the rack.
Maybe the Black Book authorities knew the rack contractor and got the numbers from them.
Sorry my message implied it was a factory installed option.

It was close to 8 years ago. Then MA Eck had them for around $200. I probably paid close to that
A fellow here had one, asking $400 recently. He may still have it. I woulf pay 400 if I didn't already have one. They are very functional and look great

If they were dealer-installed, then why would the code be included on the factory RPO sticker? There would be no assurance that it would actually be installed on that particular car.

P believe they were ordered with the car and came in the car, hence they would end up on the sticker. This occurred with several things on the C4, Decals such as pace car being the first thing that comes to mind. I would think that you could also have bought them across the counter at your dealer parts dept.
Looking at the vehicle assembly process and at the time and work involved installing the rack, I would think it only could have taken place after production, not along the line or as part of the assembly process. Particularly with so few being ordered.
