Default 92 or 95...what should I consider

Hi all,

Been off the forum for a while. Started looking at vettes over a year ago. It was consuming my life. Found a deal on a 92 (black/black) that was hard to believe and the car was bought out from under me. Pretty upset and took some time off. Have recently been back in the market but just not so deep. Anyway, I have found two cars that have some possibility. One is a 92 (green/tan) with 66k miles and the other a 95 with 95k miles. Asking price for the 92 is 11,500 and the 95 is 13,995. I figure if I got serious about either car I could do a little dealing. What I would like to here from you guys is what I should consider with either car. Any major differences? Are there enough improvements in the 95 to warrant the extra 2500 dollars or would it be better to get the 92 and have the 2000 or so dollars to do a few minor interior upgrades is needs etc. TIA

Mark

I am in the same boat. I am looking at three different ones. In my opinion buy the one that needs the least amout of work done to it. When I bought my 78, I had to do alot to it. I spent more than if I would have bought one in perfect shape. I am probably going to but a Red 92 with 25000 miles.

Good luck

Consider the cars equal and buy the strongest nicest driving one. I would personally buy the newest i could afford unless the older one was a deal i couldnt pass on.

The 95 has the updated Optispark, a definite plus.
The 95 has 10 ft/lbs more torque than 92.
The 95 is MAF, the 92 is MAP.
The 95 has better sport seats(only for ease of entering/exiting)
The 95 has a smaller lighter updated ASR/ABS unit.

The 92 is cheaper.

Other than that(all I can think of right now), pretty much the same car.

What color is the 95?

Mojo,

Thanks for the info on the two cars. As far as the color on the 95. I think you would like it......RED! What is MAF/MAP? Mass air flow and ......? Any advantage of one over the other?

MAP = Manifold Absolute Pressure, I'm still learning about it, since my 93 is MAP, I think it's also refered to as Speed Density.

to be honest, I need more info...

are they auto? stick? what?

I am partial to the 92 with the green tan... but thats just me!

The 95 has the better opti... but the 92 can be updated.

The 95's interior has 2 airbags. and some inherent improvments from year to year...

the miles lead me to the 92... less miles versus less time... but the 92 sounds better...

The 95 has the ZR1 brake package as standard equipment... the 92 may or may not have that option, look for RPO code J55. The 95 "should" have less rattles and squeeks as GM did a lot to quiet that down in the later years.

Here's a list of changes from year to year...

Guys, 30K miles is nothing to sneeze at. For some Vette owners thats several years of driving. :D

I would say go for the lower miles, unless you plan on driving it every day.

The 95 has sequential port injection, the 92 has multi-port..(which means the 95 idles a little smoother.). The 95 has a MAS air sensor, as stated above, which the 92 does not have, The MAS is a pretty penny if it is fondled the wrong way... The interior gauge lights on the 95 are white, as opposed to orange on the 92, I'd prefer white...it looks much more sleek. The seats are different, and easier to get out of in the 95, but, also more expensive to replace in the 95, because the covers are bonded to the foam... so if they need replaced soon, do your homework. I personally like the 92 style seats better, but I'm young. The carpet is a little better in the 95, and they made small interior changes(vents, console, airbag, steering wheel...)
If the 95 doesn't have a Z07 suspension package, then it has 17x8.5 inch rims in front, and 17x9.5 in back... which means no rotating... and tiny rims up front. the 92 has 17x 9.5 all the way around... but the wheels on the92 are painted, as opposed to the brushed aluminum in 95, which look a lot better(but I say chrome either set!!!)
The 95 has 134a freon for the AC which is about $5.00 a pound, but the 92 has R-12, which was $65/lb last summer, no telling this summer... so that would be an issue... (I've spent over a grand because of that R-12, any other problems and it gets a conversion!!!)
There are some cooling line differences, specifically around the top right of the radiator, the 95 is a little better, but attention to detail will drive you crazy!!!
one more recomendation, if neither is a 6-speed, wait for one!!!!my automatic sucks!!! and I'd never recommend one to anyone!!! but thats just my anger cause I'm about to put a new one in, cause mine is on its way out!
Drive them both, to the limit, and see which is better... and $14 for a 95 with almost 100k is a bit high, there are alot of vettes out there for $14,000...don't jump the gun...

If I were you I would get the newest possible vette. The 92 may be cheaper but 95 has been improved upon alot since 92. I was in the same boat when I was buying mine. It was between a 92 and a 96. The 96 was more but I didnt wanna have probs with the opti spark and so on. I went for the 96 and I love it. The suspension is also alot better in the 96...alot smoother.
