I think that was the only one but I still wouldn't have paid that for it. They were toying with that handling system but it would have raised the price almost to ZR-1 levels. Combined with ZR-1 package that would have put the cost to present day Z06 prices or better and that back in 1990.
It's worth what someone will pay for it.....therefore this car was worth $137K. Sounds like both parties are happy with the transaction.....more power to them.
Yes this is last years BJ auction and they sold lots of GM's specialty cars. The 89 ZR1 was bought by Rick Hendrick - actually most thought all the prices were down from the previous year on most of the cars.
I am looking forward to the NEW BJ auctions that starts January 19th to see what the "change" has done to the collector car market. This has been a very hard year on lots of big investors, so their liquid cash for cars may be more limited. It should be interesting.
In June the Mecum auctions has a two day Corvette ONLY auction at Bloomington Gold that will be the one to watch for some good buys, or good sales. It was on HDTHR last year, and I suppose this year also - so many probably won't get to see it if their TV programming isn't HD.
An interesting thought... assuming we could get the price (reasonable in that you get what you asked for i.e. 15K-20K for LT1's, LT4's > LT1's, etc) what would you purchase next? Keep in mind that everyone's value of thier cars also go up...

There were 80 something "mules" that where built and I believe 50 of them went to switzerland or where ever the publicity tour was. As far as I know, all of the test mules were crushed. The car that Rick Hendrick bought was the "snake skinner" as described by John Heinrecy. That car is the most legendary of the flat dash zr-1 cars. It has had quite a bit of weight reduction and other experimental engineering concepts.
If I had that kind of money that most of the bidders at BJ have, I would of bought the snake skinner car even if it took my last dollar. I had a '92 zr-1 a couple of years ago and I did not like it. I loved the lt5 but I did not like the handling as well as I do my '86 z51 that I just bought. I also hated the interior.
I think one of the main reasons I would love to have an '89 zr-1 is because I absolutley LOATH the interior that started in '90 on the c4s. I have actually talked to Gordon Killebrew about building an '89 zr1 clone by putting an lt5 in it. He said it could be done but it would be alot of work.
Anyway, I am looking forward to seeing if any of these flat dash zr-1s come back on the market in a couple of weeks at scottsdale..................
