I recently purchased an '85 Vette for restoring. I've replaced the rear ornament that's on the gas cap door. It was held on with 8mm nuts and the adhesive that comes with the ornament. I can't seem to find the right size socket for the hood ornament nuts. I've tried 6,7, and 8mm but nont of them seem to work. Has anyone replaced their's lately and what size are the nuts? Thanks.
Thanks Jon M. I'lll try 10mm and see if that works. When I brought it home, there was a black widow spider living in the fan area. Tells me that it hadn't been driven for a while. First thing I did was got out the Raid and went "Rambo" on the engine compartment. It passed SMOG, and it's not burning oil, so that's a good sign. Neighbor has a '93 Vette. He drove mine and said that it runs fine and rides good, so I have something here with potential.
One other thing...if the front one has the sticky backing on it, get a piece of fishing line and saw it off like dental floss. Then you can clean up the hood before you put the new one on. The new ones don't come with the backing. BTW...Welcome and good luck
Great idea JonM. I placed an ice cream stick on the gas cap door and used it to cushion the screw driver that I was using to pry the old ornament off. The whole time I was sweating the wood splitting and the screw driver gauging the paint. Using fishing line to saw through the adhesive would be a much safer way to do it. Thanks for the advice.
In addition to the fishing line trick, you can also use a hairdryer on the emblem to loosen up the adhesive. I don't get too close to the paint, but it should help to soften the adhesive. :yesnod:
Be careful when taking the nuts off, they have a tendency to drop off the socket and go inside the hood. This happened with both of mine and had to replace both of them.
along with the fishing line trick you can go to home depot or something and pick up an adhesive remover such as, Goo-Gone and you can liberally spread that over the emblem to soak into the adhesive so it makes it a very easy piece to remove. also the googone will help to clean off any residue the adhesive backing leaves behind.
Thanks everyone. I got them off this morning with a 10mm socket and of course I dropped both nuts into the "void" under the bolt holes. So it's either get out the magnet or leave them. The new emblem isn't threaded for fasteners, so I guess it's adhesive only.
Go to the hardware store and get some galvanized self-threading nuts. They look like they are made and stamped out of tin (flimsy looking). This way if you ever get a build up of wax or dirt inside the emblem, you can remove it and clean underneath. Don’t tighten the nuts to tight or you can break the stud. I have proof hanging on my cork board in front of me.

None of the hood emblems are threaded. You need to get 10mm self threading nuts. They will cut into the material and make their own threads when installing.
