I ditched the stock setup for an Alpine Digital Media Receiver. No cd player, just Ipod and USB connections. Now no more loose CDs flying around the car. And with the Crutchfield GM connector, I was able to keep all the stock speakers for now. Had to length the wires about 4 feet to run it to the rear storage compartment, but other wise it was a very easy install.
For some reason I can't find a photo with the radio surround back in place.
Its routes into my console. Mine is considered old school as a Generation II IPOD so all the newer smaller generation/versions will certainly fit. Nothing is veiwable it all runs under the Shifter/cup holder tray mount. I am using an Pioneer AVIC Z series Nav unit if you want more pictures of that set up you can view them in My corvette Pictures on the left. The IPOD is controled by either touchscreen, The remote on my sterring wheel or by voice command through my bluetooth adapter. I tend to use voice. GC
I have an 89 with the orig.Bose system with the cassette...I purchased the cassette adapter then opened it up shortened the wire so there is only about 5" coming out of the cassette then put a strip of velcro alongside the radio and a piece on the back of my iTouch...it doesn't move and I can switch songs without a problem, my cellphone also has velcro on it and a piece by the radio as well, the velcro is black and only about an 1 to 2 inchs long.
I have about 800 downloads on the iTouch and listened to it from Florida to Bowling Green for the 09 Caravan, never once did it come off, only to recharge.
It's not the most technalogical upgrade but it works well even with a 20 year old Bose system, it is a roadster so you just crank it up all the way and smile!
