I have a 91 and i have a chance to get a hypertech chip for the computer and a hypertech throttle chip for 75 bucks. Do they even make a gain in the hp or 0-60 time?
The long-standing consensus on the forum is that they're both worthless, particularly on a stock engine. The throttle chip merely fools the ECM into thinking you're at WOT somewhere around 60% throttle. You can get the same effect for free by mashing the pedal to the floor. Seriously....that's all it does.
The magazine articles say they work? But it could have been the track got better after the install of the chip or their driving got a little better? I have one in both of my cars, and it does help in picking up chicks.
These cheap "e-bay" type chips just trick the car into thinking it's running lean, so it dumps more fuel in. I wouldn't ever put one in any of my vehicles.
I put a throttle body air foil and flowmaster mufflers on the car 1st. These two changes made the idle and just off idle have a little bit of a stumble. When I put the chip in, it cured the stumble problem.
I think the changes made only a very slight change in performance. It was not enough to make it worth the cost. They did do some however.
Just like most of the comments on this forum the chip and airfoil did very little and the flowmasters mainly changed the exhaust sound.
