Is there an online or pdf version of a shop manual out there for a 1986 Corvette? I know it's apples and oranges but with my quads and Yamaha Rhino there are digital versions pretty readily available. Any help is greatly appreciated.
You can find the books (2 volume set with red covers) in the C4 Parts For Sale section on occasion. Helm is the company that sells new books www.helminc.com They are well worth having if you intend to do your own work.
But for CD or pdf copies, unless somebody has copied them, they really aren't available. Helm may have a CD version but the4y are very pricey.

Are there two volumes for '86? All I have is a single red cover volume and a thin white cover schematic update.

The 86 FSM is a two-book set. The red cover is the "production" version and the white cover is the "preliminary" version. But for the most part, what is in the white book should be fine for most electrical work.
Your white cover book is the Electrical Diagnosis book. The cover should say something like "Electrical Diagnosis Service Manual Supplement". It's not really an "update" as the main book does not deal with electrical stuff.

Still confused. Does the red book and white book cover the same material? If so, are we talking two "editions", e.g. preliminary and final, versus two volumes? Or is the material required spread across multiple books?
There are two volumes to the FSM, but there are red cover and white cover versions. The books with the white covers are the preliminary editions. These books were sent to GM dealerships where the techs got to review them and make any changes or additions to the various repair sections. Once that was done, the red cover books were printed and became the production editions.
So in the sense of the two different sets by cover color covering the same material, yes they do. But the red cover books have updated information.
So what you have sounds like the final edition for Volume 1 (red cover) and the preliminary (white cover) for the electrical "supplement". But even though your white book is referred to as a supplement, the information deals only with electrical service and it should be thought of as more like a "Volume 2".
Later FSM's for other years added driveability and emission sections to the second book.
