It is a problem with the 84's I just put on the BFG's on my 84. The 255 50 16 is getting harder to find. The next time I may only be able to put 245 50 16 on it or go to a 17 inch rim.
There just isn't the market to support a wide selection of tires in that size anymore. Remember, the last Corvette to use this size of tire new was manufactured 23 years ago. When I bought my Kumhos in 2004, there were at least a dozen tires in that size made. I was shocked to find it's dwindled down to nothing. When these tires are gone, I will go to 17" rims.
And it dawns on me that my tires are now 6 years old....at best I have a couple of good years left in them even though they only have about 8K miles on them. The car is garaged, so no dry rot, and they still grip good....but for how much longer?
I guess to answer your question about the age, we'd need to know how many miles you anticipate driving in the coming years. If you plan on wearing them out in 3-5 years, the tire age isn't an issue. If the car is seldom driven, they will die of old age long before they're worn out.
Try Mirada Sport GT's! Do an internet search on Google to see who sells them. They are not that expensive and I think that they are made by Yokohama but I'm not sure. The only reason I know is that my dad and I went to look at a 53 MG that was for sale, which he eventually bought, and parked next to it was an 87 vette sitting on Mirada Sport GT's. The only reason that I noticed was that I happened to be looking for new tires for my 86 and I asked the owner about them since I had never heard of them. The owner said that she really liked them and that they had a good ride. Any other feedback because I was ready to buy the BFG's.
In answer to PROJECT FOUR'S questions about production date, on the back side of the tire, following the DOT stamp, is a date code. That tells when they were made.
If it is 3508, that means they were make in the 35th week of 2007, etc.
I will try the other suggestions that were sent. Thanks.
