You may want to tell your painter that a paper dust mask will not protect him from the paint fumes. He needs a cartridge filter type mask. You can get them for $19.99 at Lowe's.
Trust me on this one. When I first started painting I sprayed a s10 pick up truck with the garage sealed up and me with only a paper mask. The next day I was so sick I went to the doctor. Paint fumes can seriously flock you up.

While ignorance may be bliss, it can also be fatal.
He could talk to my sister about the effects of painting vehicles with a dust mask but he would have to die first.

1 time is all it takes. Ive been their I had that same attitude. I owned a mask and refused to use it. I was young and never been sick in my life. I had been to the doctor 6 times my whole adult life. And 4 of the 6 times where for stitches and broken bones. I'm not the kind of person that get sick from everything. I smoke 2 packs a day and still say they are not harming me.
But when it comes to painting I will never do so without my mask again. From spraying 1 time without a mask I was very sick for a solid 3 weeks. I had panic attack type symptoms, shortness of breath, light headed and dizzy, cold sweets, I could feel my heart beat in every single once of my body. I spent two days like this before I decided to go to the doctor and even then I had no idea it was from the paint. The ER doctor thought I was a junkie in withdraw
I ended up going to 3 doctors and not one could tell me what was wrong with me. I dropped from 160lbs to 145lbs from not eating or sleeping. I refused to sleep because I honestly thought if I did sleep I would die. Finlay I went to a doctor that asked what I did around the time of being sick, and I told him I painted my truck. He took some blood and 2 days later he sent me to go donate plasma from my blood. They hooked me up to a machine that took my blood from one arm, filtered the plasma out and pumped it in the other arm. About 6 hours later I could feel myself getting better every hour. I lost a good job, racked up $2400 in medical bills that I still owe and it scared me so much. I thought at any minute I was going to die.
It turned out being the cheap acrylic enamel paint I used. It has something in it called "methyl isobutil". It was in my blood and It attached to my nerve endings in my brain and spinal cord causing brain and nervous system to go into hyper drive. And it was in my kidneys and liver causing me to get very sick when I ate.
In other words, It ****ed me up big time.
I don't wish that on anyone, No one is picking on you or trying to scare you. Just want to let you aware of the danger. Their is a reason paint says "for professional use only" It has nothing to do with the quality it has to do with the safety of the product. If ever in a doubt read the MSDS.

Seriously, good post and info...
"Methyl isobutyl ketone is used as a solvent for gums, resins, paints, varnishes, lacquers, and nitrocellulose. Acute (short-term) exposure to methyl isobutyl ketone may irritate the eyes and mucous membranes, and cause weakness, headache, nausea, lightheadedness, vomiting, dizziness, incoordination, narcosis in humans. Chronic (long-term) occupational exposure to methyl isobutyl ketone has been observed to cause nausea, headache, burning in the eyes, weakness, insomnia, intestinal pain, and slight enlargement of the liver in humans. Lethargy and kidney and liver effects have been observed in rats and mice chronically exposed by gavage (experimentally placing the chemical in the stomach), ingestion, and inhalation. EPA has classified methyl isobutyl ketone as a Group D, not classifiable as to human carcinogenicity."

He's correct on this. Can be fatal.
