Default Vats disable unit

Hey everyone, i was just curios about the VATS disable unit that you can purchase online and if/how well it works? Here is a link to one http://www.mamotorworks.com/corvette-3-0-863.html

Given VATS is just a resistor in the key, substituting the right resistor
should work just fine. And you don't need to go the dealer to find out
which VATS resistor you have. You can measure the resistance of your
key and Google up a table of resistances.

How do u measure the resistance of the key without going to a dealer?
I also need to disable my VATS. At least once a week I have to wait 5mins to start my car.

Mine does the same crap. Not sure if it the Vats or the clutch petal switch? But soon as I let her sit 5 mins. It fires right up.

Vats module sinks (grounds) the output signal from the ecm at 30hz (early MY) or 50 hz ( very late MY)... wrong hz/no sink/continuous sink = no laundry.

'final answer' to vats is to program 'off' in ecm, buy a sim for ~$50, or build your own sim for ~$10

$30 resistor is a rip, imho.

i replaced mine with a 98 cent resistor from
radio shack, plugged right into the VATS leads.
as i recall, the resistance value has to be within
10%..think i used a 1.6 m ohm resistor.of course
that will vary with the resistance of your key.

Na its not your clutch its the VATS. If was to keep trying to start it, it would take even long to start but after I did many trial and error tests I realized if i try once and it shuts off immediately then I wait 5 mins it starts right up.

Use a digital voltmeter to measure the resistance between
the two brass contacts on the key.

You can bypass VATS, but then your vette is open for the most common way car thieves acquire a vette. They bash the steering column and jump the ignition. The ignition lock has two contacts that make connection to the pellet in your ign key and a new lock has new contacts that will stop your problem. Also, later C4's will not allow you to merely unplug the wires from the ign lock and insert the correct value resistor. They require the resistor to be removed after the engine is shut off and reinserted just like occurs when you operate your car.
The person I bought my 87 vette from bought a new 89. Shortly after they took delivery, they came out of work to find the driver window busted out and the steering column busted apart, ........BUT......the new 89 hadn't budged an inch. If you take care of your car, your car will take care of you!

So you saying if i get a new ign lock and key I wont have this problem more or are you just assuming this?

If you will bother to find out if the ign lock contacts are not making reliable connection to the pellet, THEN replacing the lock is going to make your car a reliable starter again. I have been driving my 87 vette for 21 years now, every day. I have had to replace the ign lock twice, both times I unplugged the two wires from the ign lock, inserted my ign key, and measure the resistance across the two wires and compared this resistance to the pellet. I confirmed that the lock contacts were no longer making connection. I have typed the instructions on how to do this more than a hundred times. Some people actually take my advice and do the measurements and repair their VATS. I read all the time here where people either just start replacing parts or do nothing and become agitated that their C4 still strands them someplace and they want to bypass VATS. I usually ask them if a headlight stops working, do they epoxy a flashlight onto their hood. Most don't get the connection.
My ABS quit working one day. Yes, you can pull the fuse and forget about ABS. You don't need ABS. I understand the value of ABS and I fixed mine. Oh, I have had headlights quit working too, I replaced them, they became burned out.

Ok point taken. I am not really mechanically inclined but can you send me a link to where you have typed theses instructions. If it is simple enough I will attempt to do it myself and save money. Thanks....

Oh and my headlight motors broke also and I just had them replaced.

can't, no liability insurance for such activity, plus my time/sell cost would exceed the on-line price.

all the bad guys already have 'em, vats is useless, you might as well get one too
