Ok, edit after Hokie beat me to it. If you want the wheels to sit out like stock, use adapters. Also have to look behind the tire before changing to see if you have 3/4" clearance from brake lines, inner fender etc. Typically, You will need adapters on all 4 wheels- 18mm or 3/4". (you're going from 38mm backspace to 56mm) I don't believe they make adapters at 3/4", so bump up to 1" adapters on all 4 corners. Adapters bolt onto the existing hub and utilize new studs, vs spacers which is merely a disk and does not bolt on, also requiring changing all the studs to longer ones.
The Eckler's adapters are 3/4" thick so they will place the wheel in the "proper" position in the wheel well. Other Corvette accessory vendors sell the same adapter so it may pay to shop around especially to save on shipping costs. As mentioned, a 1" thick adapter will work and not cause any problems.
With this size adapter, you can easily use the later 17x9.5" sawblade wheel and a 275/40-17 tire. This tire is very close in both diameter and tread width to the early 255/50-16 tire mounted on a 16x9.5" wheel. You won't have any clearance issues and the speedometer reading will not be off very much at all.
