Default glass top

Hi

My recently purchased '95 Coupe has a glass top. I noticed the top had two cracks, and had flaked out. So, I decided to have it sanded, filled and painted. I guess I thought that my top had been abused.

Well, tonight I looked at another '95 coupe with a glass top, and there were cracks all over the place, like at least a dozen--and it looked like a well taken-care-of car.

Now, I am thinking you can be careful and still get the cracks. So, how does one avoid the top cracks? I am putting a few bucks into mine to make it look good, and would like to keep it that way.

Any advice?

Thanks.

When I got my 95 in October the top had cracks in too I am having it repaired right now. the car has been well taken care of too. I think there is something to it. Stress, flexing or something else. The body guy did not understand it. Big crack neer the trim that goes around it but the trim was fine.

The crack in that picture can very well be caused when placing or removing the top from the rear storage hatch.

The two back corners slide into those holders, and secure it in place.
When the top is removed, if you raise it up too far before pulling it back out of the holder you stand a very good chance of putting a crack in one of the corners.

Some of the other so called "hazing" or "stress cracks" can just be age and sun related.
I know some of you said "well maintained car". But the sun can be brutal on the top. Remember, even the newest of these cars 14 years old now.

...that's what i was thinking, but i can't recall putting any kind of stress on it due to a install/remove procedure. fortunately, the cracks are hairline, and don't cause any leaking issues.

There has to be a method to "refurbishing" these. I see them advertised at Corvette America for a refurbished acrylic top for around 800 bucks. Anybody know how to do this?

The car I just bought has a small 1" crack above the middle of the passenger's door.
