Default Compatible 700R4 Tranny

I was told by someone who has worked on both Firebirds and Corvettes that the 700R4 in a 91 Firebird would work in my 84 Vette. All that is required is changing out the tail extension and the servos.

Is this a a true state, can I use a 700R4 for Firebirds and Camaros?

Thanks,

I think the output shaft is shorter in the Vette transmission. If so, that means that you have to take the trans apart to get it changed or somehow cut it.

Just get the right one, there is less to deal with.

Always the wise move but I am running an 89 TA transmission in my 85. I didn't have to change the output shaft either, only the tailstock. Do not know why. I should add the innards were upgraded with a B&M Master kit. Don't recall what that did to the servos exactly.

You didn't change the output shaft but it is definitely different in length from what I saw when it came out.

Exactly same trans ; Vette has different shift calibrations and servos to suit it's perf application.Will require convertor to suit the later trans

Same here;
output shaft stuck out further with C4 housing but still had plenty of freeplay on yoke without bottoming out.Some have had to trim shaft to get correct yoke clearance

I did just that and swapped the tailhousing when I transplanted it. Somehow the tailhousing came loose from the driveshaft vibration or something to that effect. Bottom line is they blamed the output shaft being too long and it wasn't even under warranty so I doubt they would try to shaft me.

Look closely at the pics above. The c4 vette tailhousing has a thicker base, requiring bolts that are 1/4 inch longer. Most that do the conversion do not realize this, and the tailhousings fall off.

We did use the longer bolts since they came with the tailhousing I got.

Did you torque em to 24 ft lbs? If you did, it was a fluke. My problem with not cutting the driveshaft on those conversions was that the yoke bottomed out before I could get the driveshaft into the rear end yoke.
From the factory they were approx 3/4 shorter on the vette. I say approx because the factory took a stock 2wd talhousing and cut about 3/4 off. The vette tailhousing started life as a 2wd car or truck output shaft. I chop them off so nice, that people can't tell I did it. I even duplicate the factory chamfer.

It has been over 5 years but I am sure I did not change the output shaft, only the tail stock.
