Hello all,
I have a 1988 corvette and am having ongoing issues with my key ignition. I put the key in and try to start it and nothing happens. Sometimes if I wait awile and try again it starts. I have had the ignition switch unit replaced and a new key by the dealer and it lasted about 1 year and the problem started again!!! I have been told that inside of the ignition switch there are small wires that make contact with the key that deactivates the theif pervention circuit.I really need some help here. What should I do? Buy another model corvette????
Hey, welcome to the forum. I would start by doing a search for VATS on the forum. I'm no expert but I think that is the system they put on your year of Vette. Basically the key has a pellet in it that is calibrated to have a certain resistance. When you put the key in the ignition a charge goes across that pellet and if the resistance matches what the computer is expecting it will allow you to start the car. You can buy a kit that bypasses this system or you can make a resistor yourself with parts from RadioShack (not that hard to do). I had a problem recently and my problem started out like a theft deterrent problem but ended up being a short in the wirring to the solonoid on the starter.
Like I said, I would start by doing a search of the forum. Go to the red menu bar, click search, and type in VATS and you should get a whole bunch of threads on this and I'm sure you'll be able to find your answer because though I've done the steps on those posts, I'm not smart enough to tell you how or why.
