I just got a Gamin to use and I didn't like the way it worked in OEM lighter and didn't like that fact it was not a switched power source. So I bought a new style socket that was deeper for a better connection then hooked it to a switched power source mounted it out of sight and ran the wire so it's concealed. Works great: thumbs:

- did a similar thing for my XM receiver. the only difference, i bought one with a built in 1A fuse - wired it in to a keyed power source, and tucked everything up under the dash.
There is a fuse for the cig lighter. Look at the auxiliary fuse panel #2. It's a 15A fuse, 2nd from the left. It should be labeled "B CONV PL" This panel is below the right hand side of the dash forward of the radio receiver box. You will have to pull the hush panel to get to the area.
The 92 also has two 12V power sources located under the console just at the front of the lid. One wire is orange and it is hot at all times (this is on the same fuse as the cig lighter). The other is pink/black and is switched with the ignition. A third black wire is a ground. Both power wires will handle 10A easily.
IIRC, to get to these, you have to open the console lid, remove the screws that hold the back of the console and also the screws in the cup holder. You may also have to remove a screw behind the ashtray but I can't remember.
Gently lift up the rear of the console and you should see the wires. Pull them out and into the console box. You can strip the ends and attach whaever type of connector you need.
Hey I just got my 92' corvette today, and was trying to plug my gps in, and notice it wouldn't power on. Is it a fuse that is out? or does the cigarette plug adapter not work on ipod chargers or my gps or etc...
Shane congrats on the vette and welcome to the forum. You should post some pix of your car when you get a chance.
I realize you said the GPS won't power up but was wondering if the cig lighter it self works (gets hot)? The reason I ask is that in my 88 the lighter works fine but when I plug in my gps or cell charger I get nothing. These chargers work in any other car but not the vette, yet the vetter cig lighter DOES work. Not sure why this is. Was wondering what your lighter was doing for you...?

The socket for the lighter is not deep enough to always get a good connection, like I said that is why I added another socket
