Check the fuse. I think it was #21 but it will say right above each fuse what its for. I have the opposite problem - my light is always lit, and even pulling the fuse it remains lit.

I checked all the fuses. they are all good.

I am willing to buy a new transmitter but I want to make sure that is the problem before spending $180

I would try doing a search first, it's been covered quite a bit. I also was having problems with mine, though different than yours. I'd hold off on buying a new fob, it may not be your problem if the PKE light isn't lighting.

Do not spend money on a new fob yet. The real question is, what exactly happens when you try to reprogram it? List everything you did, every button you pushed, every light that came on, etc. That might give us enough info to suggest a fix. You may have a reciever problem rather than a fob problem. Also, have you checked all the fuses, I think there are actually three fuses that are used by the PKE system. Are your interior lights, key chime etc. all working properly?

I just bought my 96 a few weeks ago. the oo said the PKE did not work.
I went through the programming steps and it indeed did not want to program.

I putzed with it a while and tried again. It worked but the manual says to hold it for 2 secs. It took at least 10-20 secs of holding the button to get it to reprogram. Now Bobs your uncle.

Just FYI.

I did exactly as the manual said to repeogram it. the only problem is, that the PKE light NEVER lights up! so i cant really program it. when i press the button on the fob, nothing happend. no clicking, no lights.
i did check all 3 fuses and they are good.
the main problem seems to be that the PKE light never lights up or blinks.

Maybe the PKE light is burnt out, I'm assuming it's a bulb. You need to check for codes too through the DLC connector, it may be a bad receiver under the dash. I would check the codes first. Do a search on DLC codes and a lot of information comes up. You can check them using a paper clip to jump the terminals.

It's possible that the PKE is disabled. Mine was when I bought mine and once I got it to work I just disabled it again. I personally didn't really care for it. But if the PKE is disabled the PKE light won't light up...ever. It has to be enabled to light up.

Try this:
Sit in the car and hold the door button and see if the door locks cycle. This is how you enable/disable the PKE.

If the locks cycle then you just enabled the PKE.
If nothing happens and you've already tried a new battery and programming you may need a new PKE receiver.

It does not matter if it is disabled or not, you should be able to go through the programming steps in the car. If you are following the steps and holding the button in and the light never cones on, it could be the bulb is burned out, or probably the reciever needs to be replaced. What about interior lights and key chime?

even if the bulb is burned out the door locks should cycle when the FOB is programmed. That will let you know you need to replace the bulb.

Are you aware of exactly how the C4 PKE system works?
You don't use the FOB buttons to lock or unlock the doors, like you do on other keyless entry systems.

Pushing the door button on the FOB will never unlock the drivers door. It was never designed to operate that way.

Below is a link (hopefully, they'll work) to a thread on PKE I started several months ago. Below that is a link to a remote similar to what on put on my wife's '95 after about one month of her hating the PKE. Took about 2 hours to install, though I did have access to a factory wiring diagram & it works from at least 100' and likely farther. I just pulled the 5 amp PKE fuse. She didn't like it locking automatically when she'd walk away from the car, as in running grocery bags into the house. I don't use the car so it didn't matter to me but, it was definitely cheaper than replacing PKE parts AND, she's happy.

The door button is for unlocking the passenger door, if you have the PKE system set in single door mode.

The hatch button will pop the hatch.

Everything is explained in the owners manual.
If you don't have one, here is a link to where you can download a pdf version.

You can disarm the system by holding in the door lock button till it cycles twice.
The system may have been disarmed when you bought it.

You need the bulb to program the fob. You cannot program it without the PKE light working.
