My 95 was wiped out and is in the driveway. The insurance company will give me enough to pay it off and some for my pocket. They offered to let me keep it and it would cost me about $1800 to do so. Unless I can sell it for about $6k, I need to let it go. What would you do? BTW, I do NOT have money to fix it and have no idea if it can even be fixed. Frame in front of the suspension that supports the radiator and nose is destryed on the Driver's side.
I personally cannot part it out. My subdivision commitee is going to be on my butt VERY soon for even having it here. I need to unload the whole works to someone with storage or that has a C4 that has been rear-ended. The entire car is perfect except for the front clip, and radiator. Oh yeah, the seats are worn. I was under the car the day before the accident scrubbing it with a scrub brush ! The adjustor said that it was in fantastic shape. I really wish somebody could fix it for me. I guess I'll just take the insurance money and kiss the car bye-bye.
:(
man wish i could buy it off you i got plenty of storage here and i could use some of the parts myself. darn :(
well since you put it that way i suppose that yes letting the insurance company take it is your best bet.
theres no way to get a bit more than they are offering you?
I have been following your story from the very beginning. I am glad to see that you will make out well financially, but I'm still sorry for the loss of a car that you cared so much for. :(
In regard to purchasing the '95 from the Insurance Co., and reselling it - do you have any Corvette Repair shops in your area? How about a body shop that deals with Corvettes a bit more than occasionally? It could be profitable for you if you could make those arrangements.
I had a vehicle a few years ago (not a Vette) that had been totaled by the Insurance Co. They offered it to me for $300.00. I bought it from them for the $300.00, and then sold it 2 days later for $2000.00.
It worked out well; maybe you can find a shop that would be interested in it?
RubyRed,
Here's the beakdown: They are giving me $20,505 for the car. I owe $16,983 which gives me $3,522. They will pay me $15k and allow me to keep the car if I choose. That would be incredible if it was paid for. Unfortunately, I would have to pay $1,983 to get the title and then pay for the repairs. I wish if this HAD to happen, that it would have happened to a car that was paid for. I would probably be out shopping today for a reasonable substitute. It will probably be taken away from here tomorrow. I can't hold on to it forever and they will soon cut off the rental from me. I guess the choice is already made. By the way, I really like the Ruby convertibles. Very sharp. I have seen one here in Houston and they are really classy looking cars.
Let it go. If you can't do the repair work yourself or don't have access to a salvage yard you're better off starting over. I totaled my first one and had to wait awhile for my second but in the meantime saved up and ended up finding a fire sale on an even better car. :chevy
Given the information that you have provided, I am inclined to say basically the same thing that others' are saying...accept the insurance check, and begin searching for a replacement car. This is really a sad story, but I hope that something good will come of it and you are able to find a car that you can enjoy just as much as you did your '95. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.
I say "TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN", then buy beer...lots of beer for your buds
Well since you and 98TXcoupe would be the recipients of said beer, I can see why you'd answer that way. By the way, their insurance people are being jerks again. I got the check at 10:30 this morning and was told I had to return the rental TODAY!! Looks like I'll have to pay out of my pocket just to have a car to drive.
Always look at the silver lining. You can take this opportunity to take advantage of an incredibly soft C4 market. Your choices are endless at $20k. Good luck
I agree with the majority...too bad you can't part it out...I would think you could get at least $6,000 for the parts. I wonder if the receiving party of your Vette would notice any parts missing???? Keyless remotes go for $65+ on Ebay....
Since you don't have the means, storage facility, or time to part out the car, and you need something to drive, take the $3500, and put a down payment on something.
Decision made... they took it away yesterday. From what I hear it is going to auction and according to the driver it will sell FAST because it was so clean. He figures it will be back on the road in a very short time with a salvage title. I learned that if I was the one that had it fixed, it would not get a salvage title, but because it was totaled out and ownership transferred, it will be a salvage title. Also learned that you cannot finance a salvage vehicle, or so I have been told. The dealer estimated it would probably sell for around $4000 AFTER it's fixed. I would buy it back for that.
